Home     /     Blog     /     Geocells vs Geogrids: Different Approaches to Soil Reinforcement
By Sofier

Geocells and geogrids address different forms of soil interaction and should not be treated as identical reinforcement products. HDPE ground stabilization geocells use a cellular arrangement with specified infill. Their selection includes height, expanded geometry and the way the cells are restrained within the proposed construction.

An alternative based on PP biaxial geogrids uses a different geometry and needs its own relationship to aggregate and layer layout. This comparison helps purchasers identify what changes when one system is proposed in place of the other, rather than assuming a generic soil-reinforcement label proves equivalence.

Compare the physical arrangement

Draw the geocell layer and the geogrid layer within their respective proposed sections. Record infill, support and adjoining materials. The two products may occupy different positions and require different construction details. A meaningful comparison should show the complete arrangement, not merely two samples placed side by side on a desk.

Ask what function is required

Identify the design objective and the evidence the reviewer expects for it. Ground support, reinforcement and surface containment can involve distinct questions. Do not change the intended function while comparing prices. If a supplier suggests a different system, ask how its proposed arrangement addresses the project's original objective and what assumptions have changed.

Compare specifications on their own terms

For cells, review expanded geometry, height and seams. For grids, review apertures, junctions and the relevant performance data. Numerical values from different test arrangements are not automatically interchangeable. Use a system-level technical review instead of trying to rank unrelated values as if they described the same component behaviour.

Consider installation differences

Geocells require expansion and maintenance of geometry before and during filling. Geogrids need the specified placement, connections and cover method. These differences influence labour, site access and inspection. Include the construction method and accessories in the cost comparison so a material-only price does not conceal a more complicated installation sequence.

Control a proposed substitution

Send Suneco New Materials the accepted system details and identify whether an alternative is being requested. Keep the change subject to the responsible designer's review. A substitution should update the section and installation requirements, ensuring that the purchased arrangement retains the intended function rather than simply replacing one geosynthetic name with another.
