By Sofier

Geomembrane selection starts with the liquid, exposure and supporting conditions the barrier must face. smooth HDPE geomembranes are one polyethylene option to assess for a defined containment duty. Choosing a thickness from a price list before describing the environment makes it difficult to establish whether the offered sheet is suitable.

The same review may consider LLDPE geomembranes where flexibility or deformation is relevant. Surface finish and seam planning remain separate decisions. This selection guide explains how to describe material, thickness and interfaces so that a quotation can be checked against the project's containment requirements.

Write down the service environment

Identify the contained fluid, operating temperatures and whether the liner remains exposed or covered. Include the intended service conditions and the applicable project specification. A broad chemical-resistance statement does not address every concentration or temperature. Ask for evidence relevant to the actual environment instead of treating all black polyethylene sheets as interchangeable barriers.

Define thickness precisely

Record nominal thickness, the required acceptance criteria and the test basis used by the project. Include roll dimensions and product designation. A thinner sheet offered at a lower price is a changed specification rather than automatically an equivalent purchase. Confirm whether textured-sheet measurements are being compared on a consistent basis with the specified surface type.

Choose the surface for its interface

Identify the materials above and below the membrane and the slope or other interface conditions. Smooth and textured finishes should be selected through the relevant design assessment. A visible texture is not a universal stability guarantee. Where testing is required, specify the actual adjoining materials and applicable conditions rather than relying on appearance alone.

Include installation in the comparison

Ask how seams, penetrations and repairs will be carried out and inspected. Discuss roll layout and site access with the installer. A material quotation may exclude welding equipment, qualified installation and quality records. Keep those items visible so the purchaser does not compare a sheet-only offer with a complete installed lining system.

Build a traceable material schedule

Send Suneco New Materials the polymer choice, thickness, finish, roll requirements and service description. Request model-specific documentation and identify any proposed substitution. Retain the accepted sheet designation with delivery and installation records, allowing the inspection team to confirm that the product used matches the approved containment proposal.
